School Spirit
We also believe that a little healthy competition goes along way. Each month, the students compete in the "Show Your Colors" School Spirit Color Challenge. During these challenges, grades compete against each other in fun team building events to earn points. The points are tallied and combined to show just how awesome this school is when we work together. Throughout the year, once we hit certain point goals, students can "unlock achievements" where we'll gather as a school community to celebrate the goals we've reached. Students can also earn points for their teams by following our Core Values, especially in the lunchrooms and bathrooms. At the end of the year, we will have a school wide party to celebrate the many accomplishments we achieved together through friendship and teamwork.
We invite our families to join us in these events and others like this throughout the school year!
Move- to-Improve
Move-to-Improve adds physical activity to classroom lessons and helps NYC elementary school students stay strong and healthy by supporting physical education (PE). Thousands of classrooms use Move-to-Improve activities for active learning.
Why get moving?
Kids and teens should be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.
Did you know physical activity helps kids’ minds and bodies?
Better sleep
Better mood
Better grades
Core Values
Our Core Values are the root beliefs that we operate from. They are the principle perspectives that guide us daily as we attempt to create a community of learners who will exhibit these essential qualities in their own lives as they go through their days here at PS 139 and continue to do so once they have left us.
Our Core Values are: Honor, Integrity, Empathy, and Leadership. They are the foundation of our School Mission and Vision, and we strive to instill them in students through character development and Social-Emotional Learning. We have tethered these values to our PBIS matrix to ensure students are constantly and consistently aware of their role in the community and how their actions impact not only themselves but those around them, exacting change and improving their community by contributing to it.
Art Residencies and Special Events
We are fortunate to be able to partner with The Broadway Class, an organization that brings music and theatrics to PS 139Q. Students participating in the art residency learn songs from a variety of genres including jazz, rock, Disney Classics, and Broadway hits. At the conclusion of their residency students showcase what they’ve learned about music theory and practice in a performance that delivers hand-clapping, toe-tapping music and is sure to bring smiles to all in the audience.
We also partner from time to time with Marquis Studios who bring culturally diverse visual art and movement activities to our students. In this partnership, students have engaged in mask-making, collage, creating models from clay, yoga, and more. These classes take place often during the school day but occasionally we have had the good fortune of sharing Marquis Studios talented teaching artists in after-school parent workshops as well.
Queens Performing Art Center is another wonderful partner of ours! Students have the opportunity to visit QPAC and watch performances, however, we also have been so lucky to have QPAC bring the shows to us! Just last year we were introduced to The Squeaky Clean Band and students were treated to a Rock & Roll performance across the decades. They discussed how music has evolved over the years, the types of instruments used, and had a full-on concert/dance party!
We are so grateful for our Art Partners; but, we don’t stop at art!
PS 139Q also has a longstanding partnership with the NY Hall of Science! Students participate in afterschool science activities through NYSCI and every year we are excited to bring to our families the Family Science Day at the NY Hall of Science where families get to tour the museum for free!
Our fourth and fifth-grade students are also benefitting this year from a CASA grant through Councilmember Holden. Through his generosity, we are partnering with the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. In this residency, students work after school to learn about concepts in science and STEAM that incorporate aspects of space and the sea. How fortunate our students are to have such amazing opportunities!
PBIS
PBIS is a proactive approach that PS 139 uses to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. The focus of PBIS is prevention. Students are taught positive behavior strategies just like they are taught any other subject such as math or reading. We recognize that students can only meet behavioral expectations if they know what is expected of them in school. Students learn what is considered appropriate behavior in various locations throughout the school environment. We use a common language to get the message across, so that there is consistency in all grades and subject areas. Students are rewarded for demonstrating these expected, positive behaviors, which encourages a safe environment at PS 139.
Hour of Code
Hour of Code is celebrated around the globe every December for one week. PS139Q celebrates this event by doing special coding projects during the students' Technology classes. We also hold parent workshops and student live demonstrations during this week. Students lead demonstrations and tutorials for guests and parents showcase just how savvy they are in programming projects such as Scratch and CoSpaces. Stickers and posters help this event become a true reason to celebrate!
International Festival
The International Festival is an annual PS 139 event that highlights the multicultural diversity of our school and students. Students sing, dance, and play instrumental music in their culture.
Jump/Jog-a-thon
The Jump/Jog-a-thon is an annual Wellness event at PS 139. Every June, students in grades K through 3 jog, jump and skip around the lap lanes of our upper yard. Students in grades 4 and 5 jump rope. The students have a fun day exercising and raise donations for our school. Parents are invited to cheer on their children and this adds to the fun.
